Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions about traditional medicine treatments and care at NTMH.

Sowa Rigpa literally means “The Science of Healing”. It is a Holistic Healing science rooted in Buddhist philosophy. Unlike modern medicine which often targets specific diseases, Sowa Rigpa also focuses on maintaining balance between the three humors called “Nyepa Sum” – Wind (Rlung), Bile (Mkhris-pa), and Phlegm (Bad-kan) within the body. It treats the whole person mind, body, and spirit rather than isolated symptoms, using herbal medicines, therapies, and dietary changes.

Yes, Traditional medicine in Bhutan is generally very safe when prescribed by qualified practitioners and produced through approved systems, with proper medication adherence. All herbal formulations are prepared according to classical Sowa Rigpa texts and the quality standards of the Bhutan Drug Regulatory Authority. Side effects are minimal but may occur, especially if treatment is not tailored to an individual’s constitution. Always inform your Drungtsho or sMenpa about any other medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

Yes, in many cases Traditional and Allopathic medicine can be used complementarily. However, it is essential to inform both your Drungtsho and allopathic physician about all the treatments you are undergoing. Certain herbal medicines may interact with pharmaceutical drugs. Therefore, it is advisable to select one preferred medication and obtain detailed information from the relevant Drungtsho.

Treatment duration varies greatly depending on the condition and the individual’s response. Acute conditions may resolve within 2–4 weeks. Chronic conditions often require longer courses of 1–3 months or more with periodic follow-ups. Therapy treatments like acupuncture are typically prescribed in courses of 10–15 sessions. Your Menpa will provide a specific treatment plan at your consultation.

Traditional medicine is particularly effective for chronic conditions, pain management, digestive disorders, respiratory conditions, neurological disorders, stress-related illness, skin conditions, and rehabilitation after stroke or injury. It is also excellent for preventive care and general wellness. While it can help with many acute conditions, serious emergencies should always be addressed at a modern hospital first.

A range of medical consultations for various diseases and herbal remedies are available, along with diverse therapies such as acupuncture, localized steaming, hot oil compresses, massage, gold needle therapy, and many others. Sorig Zhiney and luejong are specifically provided for patients dealing with mental health challenges.

Under the free Healthcare policy of the Royal Government of Bhutan, all Bhutanese citizens can access Traditional Medicine services at 100% free of cost. This benefit covers consultations, herbal medicines, and therapeutic services which are available throughout the Traditional Medicine Hospital across the country.

Traditional medicine is available for children. Traditional medicine has a rich history in Sowa Rigpa, featuring specific formulas and milder treatments suitable for various age groups. Traditional physicians are well-trained in the assessment and treatment for children depending on their condition.

Pregnant women may receive certain Traditional Medicine services under professional guidance. Some medicines and therapies may not be suitable during pregnancy; therefore, consultation with a qualified traditional physician is necessary before receiving treatment.
